The term polydactyly comes from Greek (polys, meaning "many", and daktylos, meaning "digit" or "toe"). It is a genetic mutation that causes a cat to be born with more toes than usual on one or more paws, making it a truly unique specimen.
Hemingway's legacy and "Cats with thumbs"
When talking about feline polydactyly, mentioning the famous writer Ernest Hemingway is a must. His love for these animals began when a ship captain gave him a white polydactyl cat named Snowball. Hemingway was so fascinated by him that today his historic home in Key West, Florida, remains home to dozens of cats with extra toes, direct descendants of his first pet.
The genetics behind the trait
How is this anatomical curiosity passed down? Polydactyly is a dominant genetic mutation, which keeps things fairly simple.
- What does this mean? It only takes one polydactyl parent for there to be roughly a 50% chance that their kittens will inherit those adorable extra toes.
- Every cat is unique: the number of extra toes varies greatly from one cat to another, although they are almost always found on the front paws.
Is it a health issue?
When owners discover their pet has a "mutation", it is normal for concerns to arise.
Myth vs. Reality
Polydactyly does not negatively affect your cat's health or quality of life.
