Understanding our pet's genetics can bring some surprises. If, upon receiving the report, you notice differences from what you expected, it is important to understand how our analysis works and what biological and technical factors influence the results of a pet DNA test.
The goal of Koko Genetics is to accurately identify the breeds with which your dog or cat shares the most genetic variants and markers, based purely on science. These are the main reasons why results may vary depending on the context:
-
The DNA test does not evaluate or replace a pedigree: If your pet is purebred and the result shows something different, you should know that our test is not designed to confirm or refute a pedigree. We extract your animal's "genetic signature" and compare it with reference populations. These populations do not always meet the same aesthetic standards imposed by the different breeding associations. Many official pedigrees are inherited and omit the individual and unique genetic variations of each animal. Therefore, our tool is perfect for knowing their real biological composition, but it is not valid for requesting an official pedigree document.
-
Differences with other genetic companies: If you compare our results with those of another company, it is completely normal for the breed assignment to be different. This is because each laboratory uses its own analysis methodology, different algorithms, and exclusive reference databases to interpret the genome.
-
Absence of a specific breed in the analysis: For a breed to be included in our database, it must pass rigorous scientific quality controls. A very high number of individuals who are genetically homogeneous with each other and, at the same time, sufficiently different from the rest is required. If a breed is not included, it is usually because its genome is too close to that of another breed we already have registered (which prevents distinguishing them accurately) or because it is not officially recognized in a way that allows us to guarantee a 100% reliable result.
In summary, the results of Koko Genetics reflect the evolutionary and biological proximity of your furry companion, offering you the most transparent x-ray of their genetic heritage without being conditioned by breeding standards or human documentation.
