What requirements must an animal meet to be related to mine?

To determine if another dog or cat in our database is a genetic relative of yours, at Koko Genetics we perform an exhaustive DNA comparison. Our algorithm analyzes and detects the genetic fragments that are exactly identical between the animals registered on our platform.

For the system to confirm the family relationship and show you that relative in your DNA Connect section, the following criteria must be met:

  • Minimum percentage of shared DNA: We consider two animals to be directly related when they share a minimum of 25% of the analyzed genome.
  • Second-degree relationship: This 25% genetic match corresponds to a second-degree relationship. In human families, this amount of shared DNA would be equivalent to the relationship between half-siblings, grandparents, grandchildren, uncles/aunts, or nephews/nieces.
  • Animal family dynamics: Although we use terms typical of human families to make the results more understandable, you must keep in mind that biological dynamics are different. In the animal world, it is common for them to have multiple different reproductive partners throughout their lives with their respective offspring, which creates unique and extensive family trees.
  • The selective breeding factor (inbreeding): When evaluating kinship, we also take into account the specific characteristics of each breed. Purebred animals naturally tend to share a greater amount of genetic material among themselves than mixed-breed animals. This is a direct consequence of the selective breeding used for generations to establish their physical and behavioral traits.

In summary, for the tool to connect your pet with a relative, we need to scientifically confirm that they share at least 25% of their genetics. This way, we ensure that we offer you reliable and accurate connections regarding the biological origins of your faithful companion.
