Why don't my pet's results match their actual physical appearance or those of another company?

Upon receiving your pet's genetic analysis results, you may notice some differences when comparing them to their current physical appearance or to reports issued by other laboratories. This is completely normal and is explained by two fundamental factors: technical methodology and biology.

  • Methodological differences between companies: All results derived from a genetic analysis are based on statistical algorithms with different quality controls and parameters. Each company in the sector uses its own DNA chip with different markers, exclusive databases, and proprietary algorithms. This is why, although the results between two companies usually show a similar trend, certain specific differences can be observed.

  • The impact of environmental factors on physical traits: If the results say that your pet has a physical trait that differs from reality, you must consider that traits are not only determined by the genetic factor (which is, exclusively, the information we analyze at Koko Genetics). These physical traits are also strongly regulated by an environmental factor, which can have a great impact on the presence or final expression of said trait.

  • Genetics is based on probabilities: With current knowledge of genetics, results are always expressed in terms of probability. For example, having genetic variants associated with a light eye color will increase the probability of the animal having a light eye color, but these results are not definitive.
