How is the saliva sample collected (kit with tube and swabs)?

The instructions for correct saliva collection in the pet DNA kits are reflected in the instruction booklet included in the kit that arrives at your home so that you have no doubts at the time of collection.

You can find these instructions in more detail by reading the QR code on the kit brochure or by accessing https://kokogenetics.com/welcome

Before performing the DNA test

You should not feed or drink your pet for 60 minutes before taking the sample.

The end of the swab should not touch any surface before taking the sample.

During the DNA test

Step 1: Remove one of the swabs from its packaging, being careful not to touch the tip with your fingers. Discard the wrapper. Insert the tip of the swab into the animal's mouth and rub the inside of the cheeks with it to obtain as much saliva as possible. We recommend rubbing the inside of your mouth for 60 seconds. The most common reason a test is inconclusive is due to a low concentration of DNA, so a longer swab time increases your chances of success.

Step 2: Once you have taken the saliva sample, insert the tip of the swab into the tube and remove it so that the cotton mixes with the preservative liquid.

Step 3: Break the swab into two pieces using the notch near the cotton. Said piece must be submerged in the liquid of the tube.

Steps 4-6: Perform the same operation with the other swab. If there is a third swab in your kit, use it as well following the same procedure.

Step 7: Next, close the tube with the cap, once you have the two or three swabs in the tube.

Step 8: To mix the swabs with the preservative liquid, shake the tube by inverting it about 15 times.

Step 9: Place the collection tube with the saliva samples into the bags and envelopes prepared for shipping. Finish the registration process and obtain the label for the transportation agency. It is vital to only use labels shipped from Koko Genetics, i.e. do not ship yourself.

Step 10: Take the sample to the shipping point specified in the email you received after registration.

To preserve the DNA test with saliva, make sure that the swabs are well submerged in the preservative liquid. Do not leave the samples outside the tube and, by shaking it, confirm that the ends are soaked and covered with the preservative liquid.
